Sree Chirakkakavu Bhavathi Temple:

Sree Chirakkakavu Bhavathi Temple is one of the oldest Devi Temple in North Kerala. Goddess Kaali is the presiding Diety here. The idle here is Kannadi in Krishnashila. The Goddes here is worshiped in three forms( Thrigunaathmika). The Temple is built by the then king of Kolathiri- Chirakkkal Raja afhter the swayambhoo of the goddess in Koduvally River( Vamal). Thus the Temple renowned as Sree Chirakkakavu. The goddess appeared in the azhimugham of Vamal with her parivaras(retinue) . The appearance was in the form of a devine fish in the palce where river adjoining the sea. The place where the divine presence happened is now known as VAMAL. Vamal is the Sree Moolasthana of Sree Chirakkakavu Bhagavathi. The king Chiirakkal Raja came to know about this and visited this palce and bowed the goddess. The king then buit the temple in top of Illikkunnu, where it is believed to be the thapovan of earlier era. The temple is sourronded by kavu( Bunch of treesor grove ).The temple have other deities ( Upadevathas) Guntur Kotta vaanavar, Ilankarumakan, Poothadi in a single shrine near to Sanctum Sanctorium. Out side the Nalambalam There is is a Sarppakkavu( Snake Shrine) in the north-west corner of the temple. Nagaraja & Nagakanyaka with Chithrkoodam.

Festival

The temple festival is celebrated every year in the month of medaom 9 to 12th. Normally falls on April 22 to 25th. On Medom 9th the thantrik poojas and Uthsavabali is observed. In the evening the Uthsalva kolam( Thidambu) is taken out of the temple as Ezhunnallathu by the temple priest. This occassion is the only time where the goddess comes out of the temple in full alankaras in Ulthasava Thidambu. The next Three days festival is in the form of Theyyam. There are 4 manifestations of Lord Goddess is coming as Theyyam. Chorakalathil Bhagavathi, Puthiya Bhagavathi( Thee Thira) and Cheriya Thampuratty, all are the daughters of Mother Goddes and Valiya Thampuratty - the Mother Goddess are the devi theyyams here. Guntoor Kotta vanavan, Ilankarumakan, Poothadi are teh Other male Theyyams here. On Medom 10the the Nattathira is celebrated here. On 11 th Medom Ariyalavu is observed. this is a practice of giving Rice, Pulsus and coconut oils to the all concerned coomunitties to the kavu. This recalls the the richness of the old times . In the olden days the the Temple has land from Vamla To Kali.
In the morning of 11th medom Valaiya Thampuratty visits the all devotees in the villaga ( hosuses comes under Anchukandy Parambu) and blesses the devottees.before this Kalasams from various parts of the villages comes as offerings to the devi. Motha Kalasam( first Kalasam) and Vaikalasam( the following Kalasam) has the right to enter to the temple first.By the wee housrs of 12th medom the Theyyams stat to come to the Thirumuttam in the folowing order

To the great amazement of the devotees most of the times when chaorakalthil bhagavthi theyyam appears on the courtyard of the temple a few drops of rain sweep through the place as her blessings. Very large crowd seen always to get her dharsan and blessings this time. Mulla Mala( Jasmine garland) is the main offering to Chorakkalathil Bhagavathi. By this time the smell of pure jasmine is filled all over the surrounding places of temple. Tons of garlad is offered to the Goddes by devotees.Thridly comes the Theyaam of Puthiya Bhagavathi (Theethira), The theyaam comes with the fire as ornaments and blesses the devotees.By the morning of 12 th Medom the theyyam of Ilankarumankan & poothadi appears on the courtyard of the temple. The theyyam is of devine war between the two. This theyyam makes us recollect the thought of Bali- Sugreeva war.Then comes the Goddes Mother- Thampuratty on the courtyard. The Aattam of Thampuratty with devine sword is very rare sight which gives her devotees a life’s blessings.Then the Cheriya thampuratty appears on the courtyard of the temple with beautiful white hair and other decorations.Then the Thampuratty with Thirumudy along with her daughter cheriaya thampuratty circumvent the temple the kalasams and devotees follow her in the procession.

Every day At Vamal the Sree Moola Stanam Kalasam is celebrated after teh Uchpooja.







Renovation.
The temple structure is believed to be atleast 800 yrs old the Sreekovil is renoveated recently and Punaprathishta done with Astabandha Kalasam in the year 2000
